First Aid for Mental Health
First Aid for Mental Health – Building Awareness and Resilience
At our school, we believe that preparing young people for life means more than just academic success – it means equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to look after their own wellbeing and to support others. That’s why every student has the opportunity to complete the FAA Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health.
Why we do it
Mental health is just as important as physical health. By introducing mental health awareness into our curriculum, we ensure that our young people understand what mental health is, can recognise the signs of common conditions, and know where and how to seek support.
This training helps reduce stigma and builds an open, supportive culture where it’s okay to talk about how we’re feeling.
The benefits
-
Knowledge and confidence – Students learn how to identify when they or someone else may be struggling, and how to respond appropriately.
-
Breaking down barriers – Talking about mental health openly helps to normalise the conversation and reduces stigma.
-
Resilience and self-care – Young people gain practical strategies for looking after their own wellbeing.
-
Supporting others – Students develop empathy and learn how to listen and guide peers towards the right help.
-
Skills for life – These are transferable skills that will benefit them in education, employment, and beyond.
The impact
The award empowers our students to play an active role in creating a caring and supportive school community. It helps to build resilience, confidence, and emotional literacy, which not only supports their personal wellbeing but also enhances their ability to thrive in school and in life.
By investing in mental health awareness, we are giving our students the tools they need to face challenges, support one another, and grow into compassionate and capable adults.
